How do you...........?
I dont know how you would call this effect...Tom Waits uses often, uses it for his voice..... sounds like an old time record/walkie talkie...hollow sounding (not vinyl fx)
does Live have anythinglike that?

there's a number of ways you can acheive that effect, but you can start by using the eq3 and killing both the highs and lows.

for the ultimate tom waits vocal emulation, you will need at least 1 gallon of Southern Comfort and 1/2 gallon of Fleischman's Gin.
oh yea, and a little EQing and using the 'Erosion' effect might help too.

Tom Waits used everything from a bull horns to a Battery operated voice gun. If you're going to use eq and a mic you might try an Sm 57. If you get up close it'll capture (depending on the singer) a fair amount of sweet midrangy crust that you can fine tune with the eq.
You can also hit a chest of drawers with a 2x4 for the drum track!

smoke a pack of chesterfields and have a bowl of clam chowder. that should do the trick. ( a little trick i learned in Boston)

hm. for those of us not "blessed" with Toms voice
Do your vocal recording no later than 15 minutes after you get up in the morning
Use the shittiest mic you can find
hook it up to a guitar practice amplifier. That'll do the whole midrangey-distorted thing alright...

You use a cheaper mike, the Midnight setting on Live's EQ 3, and a gate. The gate will give you the *tssschk*
Here is an example-- this uses a Flash player

yeah, nice vocal sound, mike! Which mic did you use? I like a cool little sanyo mic I actually found in a junk yard.

Thanks-- this was done with a Sony stereo mic

it's a little battery powered condenser that is basically the mic from a video camera in it's own housing. It can be switched to 90 and 120 degree stereo image.
