There is also a brand new MIDI control app called BeatSurfing that allows you to create fully customisable control surfaces from within the app itself, as well as containing physic emulations and so on. Lemur currently doesn't allow you to customise the app from the iPad - this is done a little cumbersomely through a program you install on the computer. BeatSurfing is only £7.99 as well, which compares nicely with the £29.99 for the Lemur.

That said, I own Lemur and love it. The Mu template for controlling Ableton and all its instruments and effects is just mind-blowing.

I tried the lite version of Midi designer..
and although very cool.. not quite what I'm after..

that beatsurfing looks like a great buy !
I like the concept very much..
I'll probably get it..

so you say Lemur is a good investment then.. ?
tell me more..
can the the MU template replace griid/Touchable functions?

Well, from what I understand it can replace most of TouchAble's functions, however the piano roll editor in Griid Pro makes this a pretty unique app. Again, that said, just get Genome MIDI - this allows you to draw and edit MIDI on a piano roll in exactly the same way.

What distinguishes Lemur, however, is that you can design maps for all of your plugins and music software that accept MIDI and OSC - not just Ableton. The same can be said for Genome MIDI. This is the main drawback with TouchAble and Griid Pro - if you ever decide to change your DAW in the future you've shelled out for some expensive apps that will be completely useless.

yeah.. that's what I was thinking too..
I think I've pretty much settled on getting the Lemur AND Beatsurfing (it just seems so cool)..
but thanks guys I've learned about more cool apps..
Genome MIDI looks like something to check out but I'll put it on the list for the time being..

I'm pretty new to the realm of ipad...
any other pearls of wisdom..?
(stuff to check out ? hardware outputs ? etc ?)

Well, if you are really looking for ways of integrating your iPad as far as possible into your setup (like me!) then I would definitely recommend the Alesis IO dock. It has audio in and out to the iPad (so you can record directly into Garageband for example. Garageband is an absolute no brainer of an app), and MIDI in and out through USB and dedicated MIDI sockets. The dock is instantly recognised in Ableton so its easy to set up. You can, for example, play Animoog (an amazing iPad synth from Moog) directly into an audio channel in Ableton, or even have Ableton control Animoog on your iPad!

Since using my iPad in this way I've sold everything else I owned previously (even Maschine!!!) controller-wise. Highly recommended.

By the way, if you get Beatsurfing will you let me know how you find it? I'm really tempted by it but haven't really got my head round Lemur yet!

I've been using Beat Surfing for a few days now. It's pretty mind blowing. It's a bear to set up things as cool as the original sample files it comes with, but it's still pretty fun to play with. I think it comes down to a lack of creativity in "thinking in these terms'

The sliding bars, and stateful triggers are just too cool.

Wow - so it comes with samples already built in? You don't need to connect to another device to start making music?

Btw Lemur is a nice app. There are a few oddities in the Editor but the commands are highly customizable and their response can be tailored to your needs. OSC is crucial for me so the only alternative was touchosc which is less precise for me. I also bought it so I can compare. That said live control for touchosc is à nice and complete controller for ableton.

Edit : sorry, my ipad is reluctant to let me type fluently in english.

what about touchosc? it is generic midi/osc controller, but there is posibility combining it with http://livecontrol.q3f.org/ for better control.
