Hi, so I've recently purchased kontakt 5, and am now trying it out in ableton live 8.
I want to figure out how to automate parameters within kontakt, in the arrangement window, but I'm having some problems.
I have found some tutorials on how to do this by assigning an external midi knob or something, and then using that to record the automation real time, but this isn't the method that I want to use.

I want to be able to manually draw in automation lines for certain parameters within kontakt, straight into the arrangement window. (without the use of any external midi knobs/faders)
Could anybody help me out?

p.s Does anybody know of any good tutorials for people like myself who are just starting out with kontakt? There seem to be a lack of the usual video tutorials on youtube..

All you need to do is, in Kontakt, in the upper left corner, click the "auto" tab, and it will open a list of numbers, take one of the ones that says "not assigned" and just drag the column onto a knob you want to automate. Now, when you go into arrangement view, that assignment will pop up on the list of automatable parameters under the instrument track in ableton (directly under the instrument name in the column to the far right). Just make sure the right parameter is listed, and draw away.

Obviously I now that the 300 page manual is an option, but I always to better with video tutorials made for certain specific tasks...

After you drag the Kontakt control onto the automation slot in Kontakt, you also need to press the configure button in the Ableton Kontakt device and make sure that those parameters are appearing. You have to touch or move the control in Kontakt while the configure button is pressed for them to appear in the parameter list for automation.

Actually, yeah, Glitchrock's method is a bit more straightforward, I forget why I thought you had to do it the way I suggested, even though both will work.

Not either or. You have to do both. First you must drag the auto ID slot onto a kontakt knob as you said, then you have to click on the knob while the configure button is lit in the device window. Easiest to leave the configure button lit the whole time as you're assigning automation IDs in kontakt.

So we're both right.

Ha, yeah, I realized what it was that got me confused, if you use a pre-made multisample, they often have the automation setup already programmed in, so you can just use the configure button to set it up, but with building your own patches, you have to set up the automations, I was trying to remember why I suggested that particular route, and realized it is really only necessary if you are building up a patch of your own, or using a poorly set up one. Factory sounds and commercial packs tend to have all of that stuff sorted and assigned already.
