Compression

Hey all, I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction on how to compress tracks in my songs properly and in the master. I've been watching through the tutorials but for the life of me, compression is the one thing I can't seem to get right. I know compression is used to gel things together and understand the idea of attack/release compression of it compressing slightly later in the sound or whatnot.

Could someone point me in the right direction by giving me an example how you would use compression or better yet lead me to some tutorials that will really help? I've watched many and understand a little how it works but can't seem to catch much of the differences.

Thanks in advance

Here is a great introduction video to Waves to using the software version of the most popular hardware compressor known to man.

I generally compress drums and other percussive sounds with a slow attack (10-20 ms), and I compress pads with a fast attack (0.01 to 1.0 ms). This is very general. I recommend adjusting the attack and release on the compressor to suit each sound.
