64 bit o/s

Post by ian_halsall » Tue Aug 28, 2012 12:46 pm

Has anyone got any experiences to share about windows 7 64 bit with Live 32 bit versus windows 7 32 bit with Live 32 bit?

I don't want to go to 64 bit Live because I use Max for Live but I am getting some memory issues around the 2 gig mark.

And I already set the 3 gig switch.

Cheers

Until you get to the point where you need more memory, the 32-bit runs fine under Win7 64. It just all goes to hell (for me) when I load too many big instruments.

but is it any better than 32 bit on 32 bit?

I have no idea why my projects have started to become so big.

I have a 5 minute piece with like 20 tracks and about 10 instruments.

I sliced a few things up but only like 32 bars or something.

Bosh - 2 gig!

While a couple of months ago I did a 4 channel mix that was about 2.5 hours long and that didn't cause any problems.

Anyone know of any tools that show you where in Live the memory is being used?

Maybe I'm not understanding what your saying, but it sounds like you want to run 64bit ableton beta on a 32bit operating system. This wont work. See if your computer's 64bit compatible and upgrade you operating system if it is. Only then should you install ableton 64bit

no - I am thinking of upgrading 32 bit win7 to 64 bit and continuing to use 32 bit live and I want to know if it's worth it

according to ableton 32 bit live can use 4 gig on 64 bit os - just wanted to get some user stories

I know that 64 bit apps won't work on 32 bit os;-)

1 thing I noticed just now was that after I deleted maybe 5 tracks the memory footprint didn't change (according to taskmanager) which surprised me.

I restarted Live a bit later on and found that the memory usage had gone by about 400 meg!

So it has some memory leaks - in this case it just doesn't seem to free the memory that it uses for each channel.

Not unusual in c/c++ apps.

it is !
you can run windows with 6 or 8GB. this way live can use all the memory it can. the memory limit for a win32 application on a windows 64bit system is greater than what can be achieved with the same win32 application on a 32bits windows: http://www.viva64.com/en/k/0036/
there is also a huge benefit to windows 64 (with more than 4GB of ram) : it will also leave some extra ram for the system, disk caches etc. as memory is basically free nowdays. don't resist !

note that the time where finding 64bit version of the drivers was problematic is over it seems.

side note : max 4 live might work one day in 64bits mode :) (one can dream)

yeah - free - I just opened the case to put in an extra 4gb and it was the wrong type!

50 quid, and my time - not all that free

I did this once-- blew my fking mother board, but it was a blessing in disguise, now I have an i5 core, 8gb 64 bit w-7.

I would suggest running 64 bit os.

just did it - fairly painless - just need the f-ing unlock code - madness that you need another one for the same machine on different o/s

you would think that they would use the mac address of the machine
