Jamming Over Internet In Real Time-Is That Possible??

Hello,

Is there a way of jamming over internet in real time? Is there software that will do this? I know that Logic used to have a thing called "Rocket" (I think) a few years ago, but to my knowledge doesn't run anymore.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

There are questions posed in regards to latency. But I think that if I can play shoot-em-up's with microsecond accuracy in timing. Midi should be possible too.

OSC 's designed for that as well. Originally developed by some people at UCal- Berkeley, it's included in Reaktor as a way of real-time collaboration over a network.

Monolake and Deadbeat played live together cross the Atlantic.

Check it out:

Atlantic Waves.

Any clue if this will eventually be released?

its possible, have done this several times using 'real audio' streams. it was simultaneously broadcast over the net too, akin to a radio broadcast.
can't quite remember exactly how i did it as it was a couple of years ago, but all the info was on the 'real' site. it should also be possible with quicktime streaming server, or shoutcast. try a search engine for 'live streaming'. this is for jamming in real time with audio, you can't share software with these methods.

both playing live at once is not possible because of latency, but a recording session where just one 'party' is playing while the other is listening and both can swap roles would be perfectly... possible ;)

Not really true raapie, check the Atlantic Waves link above. It has been done.

Open up a command prompt and use the "ping" command on a few IPs
from around the place. Generally unless it's 2 cities in the US you'll be
looking at 250ms +.... If a satellite is involved it takes 500ms just to get
up and down from the bird..... When I was working on VoIP in
Australia/Lebanon/Vanuatu/US we had trouble buying a bandwidth route
that was reliably under 250ms for any of those locations.

You thought 10ms or so was bad on your soundcard :-)

mmm okay. but for my timing and groove stuff real-time over the internet wouldn't work at all. but I do love to see a system which creates a listener-musician setup. this would work nicely and you won't have timing issues. but both parties need to be able to swap roles.

I remember years ago they had a tug-o-war-over-IP :-)

Was England and France from memory, had a huge big screen with the
other team showing on it and a rope attached to a hole in the wall (motor).

live is the perfect app for something like this because
1) it is a jamming app
2) when using only loops, timing is not as important as playing actual notes
3) it has the latency compensation thingie for when you connect two computers up..

what you would need is 2 live sessions, both with the same tracks etc in there and same midi mappings and just split the midi and send it to the other live machines...

Well, my main interest is audio jamming more than MIDI. All the links I have seen so far are geared to MIDI only. Is there anything out there can can deal with audio?

Thanks
