Parliament Funkadelic did this YEARS ago. I feel that funk needs to move on to ?????????????????????????????????????????
By the way, not dissing....just giving an honest opinion. I love funk but find it has become stagnant.

I can't comment on Parliament, haven't checked them out - whats definetly different about Soulive though is the fact that the keys player covers both bass and chords (just like the old b3 guys used to do) - which results in an unbelievably TIGHT music. I have seen them live in London in June and nothing, I mean NOTHING (no Maceo, no MarcusMiller, no Jamiroquai) can touch this group in terms of playing together as band (tightness, funky breaks, etc.), but you have to witness Soulive live, I could write you three pages about this fuckin great band.
And in the end, I'm not looking for musical evolution in funk music - I'm looking for THE groove, Meters Cissy Strut for example, so badass yet so simple, one of the few tunes that captures what Soulive is all about, imo.

Search for Parliament, Funkadelic, P-Funk, George Clinton.

A good aussie band from awhile back was D.I.G. (Directions in Groove)
their bass and drums had a real telepathic connection which doesn't come
out so well on the albums, but if you can find a live video..... They'd
stretch time, stretch beats, slow down speed up, always adjusting, always
keeping you guessing. Was quite original and very, very fun.

thanks for the link that band is great, but i can't let you get away with saying that you never heard of parliament, that's like saying you're a rock
and roll fan but you've never heard of the rolling stones. if you multiply that analogy a few hundred times then you'd just be just about right.

But then again, if you listen to the bulk of hiphop-songs, especially west-coast you will hear Parliament/Funkadelic all over the place. Over the last 20 years of so they've been the No1 sample vault of any HipHop act....
You could easily stage a few quiz-shows on the topic..

For a head start i HIGHLY recommend Funkadelic's "Let's take it to the stage" and Parliament's "Motor Booty Affair" along with "Mothership Connection".

Been done by Parliament is what every no brain annoying critic says about new funk acts, actually is quite far from We got the Funk.

That band is awesome btw, I've never heard of them but I will check them out and keep an eye out for them in the future.

I like alot of the www.Daptonerecords.com artists. Id recommend you check them out.

it's kind of embarrassing to talk about any kind of music without knowing the standards - especially since i do consider myself a serious funk, soul (and sometimes hiphop) affinado, oh well. I will check out parliament - promise!
The only song i "know" is "get off your ass and jam" which was cool.

About Daptone, I just bought a Sharon Jones EP along with "Thunder Chicken" by the Mighty Imperials on friday- awesome! I just noticed last week that there are so many new bands out there that try to caputre the old sound, like Breakestra of course, also check the Lefties Soulconnection, the Boogaloo Investigators, I can't remember all of them...anyway lots of good and NEW stuff out there. And keep your faves comming, I love this thread!

I never was a big parliament fan myself, but they certainly are one of the foundations for funk. I saw Sharon Jones and mighty imperials live about 2 months ago, they were awesome.

It's not embarassing at all, everyones got to start somewhere, its good to see that funk in a small way is on an up with so many great bands, and its so good to see so many young people like myself (im 22) into it.

sound very nice and nothing like parliment. more like a cross between sly and family stone, mandrill, and ohio player.

Yes & no.......Parliament/Funkadelic is actually a pretty ecclectic bunch if you check their albums over the years ( especially my favourite : Rhenium/Osmium ) . P-funk made them big, but they did go beyond the Mothership...

But then again: One day I WILL play the guitar in my diapers......
