I'm working with LIVE in a band situation, I'm very happy with what we've been able to do.

There are two problems I have:
1. How do I get the envelope to display breakpoints in arrangment view? pg. 62


2. Can I mix down to two tracks and render to wav or aiff files? I have gone though chapter 3 of the manual but just don't get whether I can.

Hopefully a tip:

If you have multiple outputs on your sound card you can use the monitor clip button. Make sure to set up your sound card outputs in it's software/mixing application. In LIVE go to the audio tab and make sure you select the other set of outputs to e.g.: 4+5.

If you don't need to preview you now have a way to use 2 sets of outputs.

If someone can help with my problems I'd greatly appreciate it.

If you click on the control (on a plugin or somewhere on the mixer) with the track unfolded, that particular control's automation envelope will appear. You can look at and edit the different envelopes by clicking on the pertinent controls on the interface. Does that help?

To bounce tracks, select "master out" as the input option on any channel(in the session view) and you'll see that record mode is activated for that track. Clicking on a record button in an empty slot will start recording the output of the master bus to a new clip in this slot. Any tracks that are active or routed to the master outs will be recorded into this new clip.

I may not have made myself clear or I am dense :)

In the arranger view should I be able to see volume envelopes if I had manipulated the faders while in session mode and recording?

I haven't bothered with effects as most of the samples I used were already processed. I will check out what you suggested.

I'm also still confused as to whether I can take a mix already recorded and in arranger view and render the mix to a stereo mix like Acid or Cubase?

Hopefully this is clearer. I don't think my initial post was very clear.

LIVE is one of the best programs I've used in years. It's the kind of program that inspires me. Recording to DAT is an option, I just thought it would be easier to do it direct to disc.

Ok. If you click on the mixer volume control in the arranger (you have to make sure the mixer is active in the arranger by selecting it from the view menu), you will see a volume envelope (if you recorded one).

Any track from the arranger can be bounced down to a stereo file into the session view (that's the only way to do it). Just mute or deactivate any other tracks you don't want to hear. I often bounce stretched and processed tracks down to stereo files to import into and further arrange and edit in Logic. Check the manual for info on activating record mode and recording new clips into the session view (you can also rename the track before recording to make the new file easier to find).

Thanks, I haven't been able to work with Live much recently but I have resolved the editing issue. It wasn't clicking that I needed to expand the track.

I haven't tried mixing down to a stereo track yet, I'm not sure what it is but it's probably on my part. I really think it would be easier to put a command in the toolbar for rendering tracks or mixes to audio.

I think the main problem here (others have mentioned the same thing to me) is that Live is different from other audio sequencers like logic, cubase, et al. Most audio sequencers give you an option to render audio files with the assumption in mind that you'll export these files to another program or burn them to cd. Live seems to be set up more so that you can RESAMPLE audio and immediately have access to in in your set. The audio bouncing procedure is currently configured more like a sampler and less like cubase. Obviously, you can still export files to other apps but it'll just take a little magic from Ableton to make the process more familiar.

This is my hack for getting mixes to audio, I set the Pre-Listening/Solo to another set of outputs, and recorded the output in Vegas Video.

Cheesy? Yes. But it's getting the job done.

Scratch what I said above (forgot to log in), the mix was scratchy when recording from Pre-Listening/Solo as an output...

What I did was send the Delta mixer to Vegas. It shares the audio out with Live. Again, a hack but at least I have the mix. :D
