working on deadline for label release and am incredibly frustrated - i don't have a good internet connection to keep downloading the constant stream of large beta files. fix one thing, another is broken.
it's sogged my enthusiasm for live 9 for sure.


this is sure to invite all sorts of replies but here's my
dumb question anyway:

IS there any sort of reliable version of live 8?

Live 8 Suite, Max for Live, 4GB RAM. macbook pro 250GB hd, 10.5.8 (cause everything (except Live - grrrr) works and I can't afford to upgrade all my apps to higher versions)
motu ultralite mk3.

This is probably your problem.
There are downsides definitely to being essentially four versions behind in upgrades, since Leopard came out there's been Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion.
I wouldn't expect anything released today or within the last two years to work on an OS released initially in 2007, and with a last update almost 3 1/2 years ago.
Upgrade to Snow Leopard at the very least before blaming Ableton.

can't financially swing the upgrade nightmare
to snow leo which would mean upgrading all my other apps, music and non-music.

i'll just limp along &
forget Live 9 altogether for now.

after being on my 3rd mac laptop and 2nd tower in 10 yrs,
my spirit and wallet are sore
from the OS and software BS upgrade game.

I get you, but you're running into problems because you're wanting to use todays updates with yesterdays OS's.

What in your system would be affected by Snow Leopard? From all accounts 10.6 was more like a streamlining of 10.5, and it was cheap!
Even today as a "vintage" OS it's $50 on Amazon.

Almost EVERY update and new piece of software I see has 10.6 as a bare minimum, so it's a good place to have a legacy system that you can keep trouble free.

after much poking and pronging, i just figured out and fixed me frustrating problem of the month, or which seems to be per deadline - oy vey!
which fortunately had nothing to do with me being on 10.5.8, or defragging, permissions or anything of the sort.
it was ableton, max4live and 'collect and save all' related.
now that i know what's up i can finish my projects and avoid trouble in the future.

Since you mentioned Snow Leo, do you happen to know of a handy source or link discussing it being a 'streamlined 10.5' ??

I can confirm for myself at least that the move to snow leopard has been rock solid, it's dirt cheap, and there wasn't any software that worked in leopard that I had to pay extra for in snow leopard. I use ableton 8.3.4 and it's solid as solid can be on my ancient core 2 duo macbook. I run M4L as well. It's the best $20 you could spend: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573 ... ow-leopard

Snow Leopard was pretty much even sold as a streamlined version of Leopard. To the point to where the first place I find it in a google search is --> http://www.tirosoft.com/products/Cheap- ... opard.html I hear you on the not wanting to chase upgrades etc. I recently bought a Mac Pro off craigslist that should prevent me from chasing upgrades laptop wise etc. Performance wise I don't need much power, it's in the studio.

I like your music, and if you could give me some advice on how to get freaking myspace to not play some completely unrelated song after you select a song from a profile playlist, that would be great! Drives me batty...

10.6.8 is really solid and I also suggest you go to it...

+ the fact that it allows you to use 64bit version of Live 8.4b9 which is pretty reliable despite of being beta (m4l is not available 64bit though).

PS... thanks for the compliments on ze music... and NO i can' figure out how to get that dang Myspace to be what we'd like it to be. I'd put my stuff on SoundCloud, except the NON-downloadable songs are actually downloadable, you can find the hrefs in the page code, as warned by an astute HTML friend.

Snow Leopard is better than Leopard.

Apple has discontinued support for Leopard, so upgrading to Snow Leopard has additional benefits, such as security updates.

Unfortunately, Snow leopard is getting pretty old & Apple will eventually discontinue support for it too.

SL is also a good OS if your Mac is older. Mountain Lion may tax older machines.

It seems to me that Snow Leopard is now free, though not advertised so. A friend of mine went to an Apple Store, and they updated his 2008 pre-unibody MBP for free !
The reason is that Lion (10.7) is the minimum OS required to use iCloud, and you can upgrade to Lion or Mountain Lion (10. only from Snow Leopard, not from Leopard.
So they upgrade you to SL for free in order for you to be able to upgrade to Lion, but after that nothing requires you to upgrade to Lion nor ML !

Maybe you should give it a try. If you don't have an Apple Store near you, I've heard (but not sure at all) that you can ask for it via phone support... but in this case they can charge the sending fees.
