It sounds to me like 3 is a perfect fifth...seems weird tho...can someone point me in the right direction or explain? Thanks!

Harmonic overtones. Each one is a multiple of the root note (1).

If you played note 110hz,
2 would be 220
3 would be 330
4 would be 440

Multiples are also convenient because they are useable for 'harmonic ratio's

You can find charts and stuff on scales, harmonic overtones, the harmonic series and harmonic ratios on wiki :)

Lastly, Spectrum is a fun way to compare things visually.

Edit: try this also ;) http://www.macableton.com/Ableton_live_ ... onics.html

cool, this article explains that the 3rd harmonic is a perfect 5th, 3 x the fundamental frequency. proud of my ears :D thank you for helping!
