Can you re-record an audio track w/o overwriting automation?

Can you re-record an audio track without overwriting automation? This is proving to be a problem for me. I am recording tracks and adding fairly complicated automation in arrangement view. But if I want to re-record the audio, it erases all of that. My current work around, which is a pain, is the duplicate the track, re-record on one track, and then copy just the automation envelop date into that newer audio track. Crazy.
thanks.

There should be a little plus sign on the track that gives you the option to put the automation in a new lane, I'm not 100% sure whether it would fix your issue but its probably your best bet.

Not a specialist, but did you try the lock automation button on the upper right corner of the arrangement view (Next to the "Set" and the arrows)?
