Via the monome forum (thanks lokey) - an interesting read - Hans Zimmer, responding to a forum request on 'how to sound like Hans Zimmer'.

Quote to note for all of the Ableton vs Bitwig vs [any other DAW you care to name] debaters: "The best DAW is the one you're used to"

:D

“... it was just to make an average listener go: ‘What the fuck is this?’ That’s a real inspiration for me and something that I will explore more on upcoming recordings.”
- Wally De Backer (Gotye) quoting Ween's intention behind making records

Great find! The first paragraph is something I've said a million times, while of course this guy actually puts it to practice professionally!

Anyway bookmarked for future insertions into "How do I find my sound? write a song?" threads.

Cool that he comments to young composers in that forum. Wonder how long he'll last before someone decides they need to be the giant killer, and dozens of sycophants chime in to defend, ruining every thread?

Looking through his other posts, damn that guy has a good life.
His post on the origin of the Inception BRAAAAMMM , it was mainly martinanyone Jet lag, and impulsively booking a studio and a brass section thrashing about. Nothing written down.

Hans Zimmer said he used Zebra for 98% of the inception movie tracks he also used zebra as his main synth in The dark knight Rises. You can buy the exact same presets used in the bat man films from U-he.

U-he's preset designer is also Hans Zimmers preset designer Howard Scarr.

The Dark Zebra
A bank of over 400 presets, a collaboration between Hans Zimmer and Howard Scarr. Practically all Zebra sounds in the The Dark Knight as well as The Dark Knight Rises soundtracks are included, plus several more that didn’t quite fit into the scores. The pack also includes Hans' custom built update from a licensed Zebra2.x to the version you can see in this video, ZebraHZ. Many of the more recent patches make use of the extra features available in ZebraHZ such as the DIVA filters.

So, the steps to global success as a soundtrack composer ...

1: Purchase Zebra
2: Become Hans Zimmer
3: Profit!

its 2 different kinds of synths. Alchemy is sample based and uses samples for oscilators, while Zebra is "Virtual Analog" and uses "real" oscilators. Those are much more crisp and punchy then sample oscilators. Its the best if you want to create clear and crisp sounds, and its better for punchy leads and bass. But sample oscilators have more sound variations. Zebra has much better filters. Alchemys sample oscilators, which can contain any kinds of sample, like human voices or your own samples, can twist and turn them around creating sonically very unike sounds, like a sampler on LSD. They are both pretty flexible and semi modular.

Zebra: Master of Analog Synth style
Alchemy: Master of Sample Synth style
