Is there a correct way to save/collect effects racks containing M4L patches so they work on other computers?

Yes, if you are using your own custom M4L devices, then you just need to include the M4L device ( ForExampleMyDevice.amxd) file along with the Live Project folder containing your (ForExampleMySong.als) file and be sure to include any Max/MSP externals or objects that are not standard to the installation of Max/MSP that the intended recipient is running.
To do this, navigate to (on Mac) Application Support/Ableton/Presets/Max MIDI -or- Audio -or- Instrument folder and find your device and copy.
Other than that inclusion, you may need to be sure that you are including externals that are platform/version-compatible (ie Mac/PC, Max5, Max6).
I hope this helps,
best,

You should "Freeze" the device...

Thanks for the replies.
And if they then want to use the objects as part of their standard setup? I'm wondering how to move the effects rack preset into an external library and have it reference the correct .amxd?
