Is it just me or is Convert To Midi From Audio Is Hopelessly Inaccurate in Live 9 Beta? Has anyone got any remotely decent results and if so can you offer any tips. I even tried just putting in a simple drum loop and it completely failed. I thought it was a bit much to ask for this feature to really work and I feel it fails much like things like melodyne editor.

Thanks

so one of the only new features ableton took 3 years to do doesn't even work, can anyone honestly say they are not slightly worried with the company's development over the last 3 years?

Audio reverse engineering never been achieved. It's impossible. You need to understand this basic.

It must be possible in principle, because it can be done by human brains. But I agree no one understands how we do it.

yep - but principle and practice are clearly two different things. As far as Ableton is concerned I'd have been amazed if they got this anywhere near Melodyne.
I'm glad I spent money on what is a decent product (Ableton Live8) because quite honestly it may be my last investment in Ableton for a long while...

yeah - when they put up the money for my upgrade, then I'll take their word as gospel...

edit: That's not to say Live 9 Audio to Midi will definitely be a disaster, but I'd want to try it out myself first...

Hear's a doodle I did when testing this feature -> http://www.sharehost.co.uk/Live/slowdance.mp3

Originally recorded from a Spanish guitar with a bug mike. Took a few minutes to correct duff notes and edit out the false notes caused by fret squeaks and handling noises.

The harmony and bass parts were extracted from a recording of me finger picking the chord progression and the melody part was extracted from a long meandering improvisation.

For reference here are the original guitar recordings

you should really discuss this on the live 9 beta forum [link on your user account page]

it works pretty well when you take the time to investigate [my point of view]

It sure does. I tested a small piano loop and it worked better than melodyne.

Audio to midi has been around since the 90's. People have too high of expectations.

Once you get a feel for what it detects and what not, its easier to edit the samples to get better results. No note separation? Use a Gate. Too much harmonic interference? Use an EQ. Sample has too much sounds going on at once? Use something like Roland R-mix to grab the relevant parts.
If the transients weren't detected, they won't show up in the conversion results. So you can even improve results by adding Transients where there should be transients...

Whinge, whinge, whinge.........Gimmee everything now but better......

How much does Melodyne cost?

If you want to remake Beethoven's sixth then get an education and do it properly.

It's a tool and it works well. Don't expect it to make you less of a tool....Fool....
