Like I said, how many people still use Mac OS9? And If so are you planning to go X?

I do, but I also use OS X. However, in some ways, OS 9 is superior. You get much less processor overhead, and hence EVERY musip application that I have where I have both versions (mainly Live and Reason) works better (snappier performance, fewer glitches, less weirdness) in OS 9. It's a crying shame. Apple has just not released laptops with the capacity to run apps in OS X as efficiently as in OS 9. They really need to bail on the Power PC processor, it seems to me, so they can catch up to Intel/Windows.

Anyway, when I need to do something intensive, I boot up my iBook G3 900 MHz in OS 9.

I've long since moved on to OS X, but i know a couple of big studios that still rock OS 9 b/c all their stuff worked perfectly on it. I'm talking they're still running version 5 of Pro Tools, and mastering joints for the likes of Avril Lavigne (or however you spell her last name).

It's funny. I had Reason but never used it until I'd upgraded to OS X. It's weird to think that in some respects OS 9 is more efficient than X.

well, i'm dipping my toes in the waters of OS X but for 99% of my work I use OS9 because my computers are more efficient with it. i don't alike the all-inclusive bloatiness of OS X... other things I do like but not enough to merit using x on my 933 mhz tower and 1Ghz Tibook.

i'll switch fully over to OS X when mac comes out with a dual 3.0 or 3.5 mhz system or, rather, i guess when their new quad processing technology is smoothed out...

plus one of my favorite audio editing apps is not available for OS X.

in a way after having been at the stage when all the softs and hardwares i had were hot new stuff... it's kinda nice knowing that i am no longer keeping up with the rat race and am just focusing on the material instead of the technology...

i still use OS9, but i also use OSX - there are some older plugs and apps i like to use that aren't available for OSX. kind of a pain in the ass.

OS9 definitely seems more responsive to me.

A big reason why a lot of studios are still running ProTools 5 in OS9 is that there are a lot of TDM plugin kracks that only exist for that system.

I booted my dual boot G4 into OS9 a couple months ago, and even though screen redraws are faster than X, OSX still feels way better to me.

i use it for my breakcore stuff, i do everything in Soundedit16 (designed to run on 8.6 i think), live i use osx on my ibook, and for my wintercamp project

note: i havent updated that site in a while but i DO have a legal copy of live now

its really funny, a few of my friends are grafics designer people for a living and at their workplace, all of the workstation computers run OS9, im like why doesnt this company jump to 10 already, what the hell is wrong with you people

I'm still using OS9 for everything but I just ordered Tiger. I had to replace my primary hard drive last week so set up the new one with 3 partitions,one for OS9 system etc, one for music applications and one for Tiger

I just finished my latest CD and had it mastered a couple of weeks ago at a studio that still uses OS 9 exclusively. They run PT HD on a 867 G4 with SpectraFoo running on a Titatnium Powerbook also running OS9.

I expect a slow transistion from OS9 to Tiger. I can finally load my Cubase SX3 which has been sitting in a box and of course Live 4 will be OSX ready.

I hope my MOTU 324 with 2408mkII will be fine with OSX and the same goes for my Edirol PCR30....oh and my Powercore PCI card should be happy with OSX as well. So I wil run a dual boot system for a while and then hopefully new G5s will have kicked in......

MOTU PCI-324 on OSX is a NIGHTMARE. It doesn't work without tons of hard system crashes (kernel panics) Upgrade to the 424 card otherwise, you'll never believe stable audio work is possible on OSX.

Interesting stuff indeed, been fully OSX here for a while on the Mac and was wondering about other folks and Ableton's plans for the future.

I'm currently running a Dual 2.5 G5, but when I did the transition, I was on a Dual 1.25 G4 MDD. It was a big deal about a year ago when many people started the transition to OSX and had 324 hardware. People were crashing all over the place and MOTU offered an upgrade path to trade in the 324 card for a 424. You'll still be able to use your interfaces, but the 424 card is definitely the way to go. Trust me... OSX takes some getting used to coming from OS9 and the last thing you want to deal with is unstable hardware.

Being a thrill seeker I am going to give the 324 a go at least before going to the 424.

I understand Cuemix will not work with the 324 in OSX but as I never ever use Cuemix that doesn't bother me.

Also I monitor via an external mixer so direct monitoring (or lack of it) doesnt bother me.

I member of the Cubase SX forum assures me his 324 has been basically problem free in OSX, subject to the caveats above.

Anyway, if the 324 turns out to be joke for me I will stop wasting time and get a 424 at that point.
