Korg EMX1-SD and Live

Hi all,

I just got a EMX1-SD and I LOVE IT! I have an audio interface and Midi cables... not very Live-knowledgeable so could someone help me set this up?

Can I record different parts of a track that I made on EMX1 and add effects and stuff using Live?

Thanks

i plugged in my emx into my audio interface and when I open Live, all of a sudden the output of my monitors becomes really fuzzy sounding and I have to close Live and restart my EMX to get the sound back to normal... any ideas?

Are you connecting an audio Out on the synth to an audio In on your interface using an audio cable?

Or are you connecting the MIDI Out on the synth to the MIDI In on your interface using an MIDI cable?

Either or both should work.

both

the synth sounds fine when I'm not running Live so I don't think it is my connections

as soon as I open Live, the sound gets distorted, noticeably distorted

I'm assuming you have active monitors connected to your audio interface. And if that's true, I'm not sure how you can hear anything at all without Live running, unless the interface has a direct monitor function..

Things I'd try:
1) Unplug either the MIDI In or the Audio In and retest. Try and isolate which one is the problem.
2) When the problem is happening, does it occur at the headphone jack on the synth? On that of the interface?
3) Do you have a MIDI cable connecting the Out of the I-face to the In of the synth? If the synth is getting midi that Live is echoing to it, (I think Live can do this - I can't find the setting..) that's a problem.

What you're trying to do is very simple - maybe there's a tutorial or something on youtube?

Best of luck sir!

I'll try the points you brought up, basically my setup is as follows

edit: yeah there is a midi out from the I-face to the midi-in of the EMX1, could this disrupt the sound?? I'll try that out tonight

Korg EMX1 - audio line L/R (1/4") outputs to the inputs of my audio interface (presonus audiobox usb)
- midi in and out to and from the audio interface

KRK R6 are connected to my audio interface

audio interface connected via USB to computer

so without opening Live, I can play the EMX1 just fine off of my monitors, no issue there

AS SOON as I open up Live, the sound instantly gets distorted and unbearable. I then have to close Live and reset my EMX1 to have the normal sound come out.. super strange

my live audio prefs are all set to my audiobox

My guess is you're monitoring your Audiobox's inputs and Live at the same time, which is maxing the main outputs of the Audiobox.
  1. Open Live, or create a new set.
  2. Drop an "External Instrument" on a Midi Track, or onto the empty workspace area.
  3. Change the "Midi To" of the External Instrument to your Audiobox's Midi Out port, and set the Midi channel for your EMX1, which is probably channel 1.
  4. Change the "Audio From" to 1/2.
  5. Record enable the track (if it isn't already).
  6. Twist the "Mixer" knob on the Audiobox fully clockwise to "Playback".
Play the EMX1, and then adjust the master volume of the EMX1, the 1 & 2 knobs on the Audiobox, and the Gain knob of Live's External Instrument to set a level that keeps the track from clipping (turning red).

Adjust the Main out of the Audiobox to change the level of your monitors.
