Live 9, 32 or 64bit install?

Hi everybody,

I'm currently using Live Suite 8 32bit on mac osx (MBP) with 4Gb of RAM.
I use third party plugs in VST 32 bit format. Just a few of them are 64bit compatible.

My question is, when Live 9 is out next week, should i install the 64 bit version and try a bridging solution to be able to use them or should i stay with the 32 bit version of Live 9?
In other word, when you only have 4Gb of RAM on your system, is there a benefit of using the 64bit version of Live instead of the 32bit version (in terms of stability, cpu usage or other)?

Thanks for your replies
Cheers
Vinz

If they are sensible like Cakewalk Sonar you should be able to use 32 bit plugins under 64 bit. Beta testers should be able to tell us.

There is no built-in bridge & currently no plans to make one.

If you don't have more than 4 GB Ram you have no advantage of using the 64bit version.

Get more RAM, then the 64bit version will be better for big livesets. For small livesets there is no difference. Only the disadvantage that some of your VSTs won't run.

Ok thanks,

I asked that because i read on the internet that the 64bit version used less CPU than the 32bit version when used with a 64bit Os and CPU like mine (i'm on MBP quadcore i7 with osx 10.8.2) and that it was more stable than the 32bit version...

Thanks anyway i think i will stay with the 32bit version...

Just figured out this article on the ableton website: https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/64bit-myths-facts/

Answered to all my questions on the subject...

Does a 'bridge' add latency?

im not 100% sure but i think yes from a the technical side because of the translation from 32 to 64 bit. and i think it´s minimal so that you never notice this latency ;)

Ableton says: It is to be expected that a plug-in translated in this manner will never run as dependably as a 32-bit plug-in in a 32-bit host or a true 64-bit plug-in in a 64-bit host.

Edit: removed post because I need to get my eyes checked.

So even with my quad-core i7 27" iMac with 12Gb of RAM, it doesn't sound like I will gain any benefits from installing 64-bit?

I don't have any issues with crashing so far.

+ if you have M4L, it won't work on 64 Bit.

Max For Live for Live 9 Suite is based on Max 6 which is 64-bit I'm fairly sure...
https://www.ableton.com/en/live/max-for-live/

So that particular bit of info you are basing your decisions on is leading you astray... If you've made any patches in Max 5 I am not sure how well they will work in Max 6 however....

Don't believe everything you read in the forums (what I've just told you could be wrong) it's best to do your own research too.
:D

:D -or me neither!

Oh another thing I wanted to mention for the OP is that he can have both versions of Live 9 installed, I have both the 32-bit & 64-bit Live 9 beta's.
...and for Max 6 you can choose to open it in 32-bit or 64-bit...
