PACE is the authorisation system. DRM, as the greyfaces call it these days. Copy-protection as we used to say. Just bend over and take it if you want to use expensive software these days ;)

This is the same core system behind iLok. It's installed as a device driver partially to shield it from userspace manipulation outside what it approves of[1], and partially to be a bastard. It's at least not running all the time though. Just wait till you discover the built-in DRM in Windows! I think there might even be a second device driver/service besides Microsoft's own OS DRM…

[1] Yes, of course it's not going to do much good. Even Ubisoft's DRM where parts of the games are stored on servers was cracked :)

hmmmm.... I clicked 'don't install' and it seems to have installed fine anyway.......... Am I set to see trouble ahead?

I think Live also is using it, so you might already have the API required for it to do its thing. Check the licenses inside Live's preferences, or simply launch Max and see what sort of mode it's in.
