Hey guys!
just wanted to know what everyone thought of the new sampled instruments and presets in live 9 suite. I have 8 suite at the moment and in my opinion there are hardly any usable strings or horns. I'm wondering if these have been updated in suite 9 and if they're on a par with the kontakt libraries yet? Also I'd like to open the thread up to any discussion on the new content shipping with suite- what do you like? whats not so good?
cheers!
Keep it Live

I am enjoying the suite 9 content. The new piano sounds good and the orchestral strings, horns, mallets, woodwinds etc are very, very usable. I used them in a track and felt no need to replace the sounds with something else. I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were compared to what I think I had in Live 8 (EIC2? -Cant remember as used it once and never again as it sounded "cheesy") Latin percussion is still the same and pretty good.

The Convolution Reverb, Glue compressor, Compressor and new EQ8 are awesome. I find myself going to these items more and more over 3rd party items such as PSP Oldtimer, PSP Noble Q, Valhalla Vintage Verb, Valhalla Room.

Overall the content far surpasses 8. The electronic and old skool type drum clips in Live 9 are more polished and sound more "produced"

In Regards to Kontakt Library comparisons....I would say that the session drums are not as good as Native Instrument Libraries like Abbey Road Drums. I have not bothered to install the Session drums as I have Abbey Rd Drums and Toontrack Libraries. The session drums "mixer" is difficult to work with.

I am still using Kontakt for following as Live 9 doesn't have these that I love: Steel Drums, World instrument type flutes.

im interested in this as a greater discussion.

maybe its a dead horse, but the idea of using all the sounds ableton provides as a means for making music kind've irks me, for some reason.

especially something like the guitar and bass pack.

i guess i can understand something like drum machines, classic ones, which have been sampled.

or perhaps software versions of hardware synths.

but i dont get recorded sounds. to me that is like, using someone elses home movies to make a film.

sure, i guess thats fine. if thats what you're doing. using someone elses samples to make music.

but i guess people dont always think about it.

ableton 9 seems to be abouut 'finding the right sound' by people who already did it for you.

but shouldn't all the fun be in using the mallets and going out and doing the impulse responses and field recordings and making your own 'live pack' in a sense?

i bought suite and i installed all the packs. but tbh in would be great if ableton just fixed all features, bugs and problems and f&*ked off the whole focus on 'over 3000 sounds'

but i guess... who cares.

you either give a shit or you dont.

and i guess both approaches are valid.

its all about what you do with the sounds i guess, like ingredients in cooking.

I agree to some extent with 'experimental' things like The Forge, but for 'real' instruments the provided samples are going to be 100x better than most people could record themselves in their bedroom. In comparison with other sample libraries, they might not be the best quality, but I think they are good value for money.

Personally, I have downloaded & installed all the packs; I doubt I would ever use anything other than the 'real' instruments, but it's still interesting to see how they were made.

As always, YMMV.
