L9 Overdub's workflow is a show killer for several users
Hi,
i think i really need to insist on the fact that the new overdub logic (using the 'session record button') is a show killer for several users, using session view to perform live.
If you have several armed tracks (which is needed in some setups), the 'session record button' triggers recording clips in every armed track.
This means :
- Impossible to overdub midi notes in clips on the fly without recording as many empty clips as the number of armed tracks.
- Impossible to record session automation on the fly without recording as many empty clips as the number of armed tracks.
This could however be done by Shift+Click on the button, which is obviously something i won't do on stage.
The only way to currently do it is to use m4l and this patch which requires aka.keyboard external.
But IMHO
- it's a shame to have to use M4L for such a task
- it requires an external max object
- not every Live user owns M4L !
What i suggest :
- Shift+Click for triggering recordings in all tracks instead of the contrary.
- Or an option for this in the prefs.
Thanks for paying attention.

(what this patch does :
you need at first to Key-Map the 'trigger session button' to a capital letter (in this case, O). Then it mimics sending the letter O)

Re: L9 OVR Logic is a show Killer for several users
Hi Louis.
You said earlier that you've got in touch with the Ableton staff about it, and that they answer you they'll work around this problem.
If you post about it this way, I guess they doesn't give you any news since then?
(I'm not forgetting you about my "without quantization looper" patch. I just have to extract and clean it, as it's part of a big one. And it could workaround the topic's problem, but I'll pm you about this with the patch).

Hi,
i just assumed it would be good to create a topic about this insisting on the fact that it may concern many users, i've read a few comments about this from different users.
Reading again my previous mail exchanges made me feel like they're not likely about to change it. They just replied that they'll transmit the idea. Hopefully i'm wrong and they do really care.

Hi, I'd just like to add my +1 to this.
I perform live with Live (huh!) and this also is a big problem for me as I also have many tracks armed at once.

Strongly agree! Bring back normal overdub

Thanks for the support, guys !
Also, if some users disagree for some reason, i'd be curious to know their reasons.

I will need to stay with Live 8 until this is changed. As a multi-instrumentalist who uses Live as a live instrument, I always have at least 6 tracks armed at all times. Please Abes!
Re: L9 OVR Logic is a show Killer for several users
I think they need an Options.txt option or different modes of overdub handling.
...I don't know if that's been suggested in other threads before or not haha

I think the reason is clear (and it applies for all the new little unpleasing way of doing things in L9)... Push.
Have a look at the videos about it to understand how it works and you'll understand everything, really.
I'm not saying Push is not a good thing, i'd love to play with this thing, but L9 was clearly built around it more than the other round.

Why not. Any way of changing this would be welcomed.yur2die4 wrote:I think they need an Options.txt option or different modes of overdub handling.
You may be right. I have nothing against ableton making a great controller interacting well with the software. It's just not my cup of tea. I'd stay DYI regarding controllers rather than changing my way of thinking to adapt it to a controller.Valiumdupeuple wrote:I think the reason is clear (and it applies for all the new little unpleasing way of doing things in L9)... I actually like their new method. One button to record in session view simplifies my workflow greatly.chapelier fou wrote:Thanks for the support, guys !

But I do understand your problem with Live recording. Ableton probably need a way to bring the old functionality back as an option.

+1 for the need of a user defined behaviour via option.
I absolutely see the/your problem.

Good.
Since you're in a good vibe with them, can you ask to also re-implement the way arrangement automations use to work pre-L9
I'm joking, I should do it myself, but, before L9 it was powerful; now it sucks but no one cares, strangely.
