Help with latency settings!

I have used Ableton in windows for a few years and recently switched to a Mac. In OSX, When I set the latency compensation and then test it with my audio interface to make sure that it is correct, I keep getting different results. It sometimes seems to stick and stay consistent but then when I restart Ableton, it is different again. It's a difference anywhere between 1 and 25ms every time. I have gone through the setup lessons. Does this have something to do with coreaudio? What are the ideal settings for the buffer size? Has anyone experienced this same problem? I can give details.
