Midi map as a midi keyboard?

Is it possible to do it on Push?
I mean using Push in normal mode, not user. So I can midi map the buttons as we did on midi keyboards.
Now if i try to midi map the buttons are not recognized.

For some reason we aren't allowed to midi map in Push mode. I pray to the saints of music making that they change this.

Ouch.
That seems incredible.

Yeah. The plan for me is to pick up a nanoKontrol2 or an APC40 for those purposes. I wish they'd put out a new APC with something close to the build quality of a Push. Would be pretty awesome. I'm still having a great time with the Push but it's definitely not an all in one solution as it stands right now but they never really advertised it as such.

There's a workaround w/ LoopHe or MIDI Yoke or the like.
* create an empty MIDI clip
* set its input to Push
* set monitoring to 'on'
* set its output to a virtual MIDI cable
* route that signal outside of Live, and back in on a different MIDI cable
* map the incoming signal
Of course, it's not 100%. If a max for live device captures the grid on some other track, those buttons won't work on this one. For example.
The way around that:
* switch monitoring to 'auto'.
The mapped buttons will only be accessible when this track is selected, but they'll behave reliably, with the added bonus that you can map different assignments just as readily through a different pair of virtual MIDI cables associated with another track, and toggle between them as desired (by selecting one track or the other)
At least, that worked in the last version. I haven't tested it recently.
Now, I do recommend, with Push, that you set aside another controller mapped exclusively to selecting different tracks and devices. Which might make you wonder why you went through all this trouble when you could have just mapped stuff to that controller in the first place. It is a more versatile configuration, though...

Hey, thanks. I'll have to bookmark this and give it a shot.

@greaterthanzero: your workaround is interesting but painful...
I have some ideas that use Push notes connected to a macro instrument, so another grid device can't do that task.
I would not like to use any midi software, but dream about a M4L device that will solve that.
So if there's a M4L coder reading now, please think about it and post here your thoughts.

Max for Live is totally doable. The only trick is making the interface manageable. (you don't want 64 "map" buttons for the grid section taking up real estate)
(but if you wanted the painful workaround, I can build you something for the Max Runtime that would create those ports and forward messages from Live back into Live. still painful, though)

Do you mean for example to decide how many rows to map on Push? That would be very good, to have 1 or more row for mapping and notes, while the others are only notes.
Like so: (o for map, n for note)
n n n n n n n n
n n n n n n n n
n n n n n n n n
n n n n n n n n
n n n n n n n n
n n n n n n n n
o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o
Let us know if you can do it without external midi plugs,
i think you will have a beer from every Push musician!
