M4L help patches have no sound and crashes Max

Hi,
I have noticed that when I right click on an object and bring up the help patch, sig~, cycle~ or live.gain for example, I click on the 'start' button etc to turn the audio status on but get no sound out. I'm sure I never had this problem with live 8 and max 5. Anyone have any ideas?
I have also noticed that if the audio status on when I close the help patch window max stops responding.
