I string sets together in arrange by copying/pasting songs into the timeline. I add a clip of pads over the seams between songs using an ionosphere midi track. Then I go in and edit the CC 7 Volume envelope to fade it up over the end of the last song and out again after the first few chords of the next. Been doing this for ages in 8.

Finally taking the plunge to use 9 live but find I can't do this anymore - I can edit the envelope but ionosphere (a Live instrument) ignores the envelop.

It must be me - any suggestions please?

I can automate track volume but would prefer to edit the midi clip's velocity values with an envelope.

I'd be grateful for any assistance.

It's not just volume - it's any envelope added using 9's midi clip editor.

More info:
I go to 8 and record a midi clip and add a couple of envelopes using the midi editor - pan and volume.
Then I open this file with 9 and play it back - all is fine - panning and volume follow the envelope.
Then I record another clip on an additional track and do exactly the same midi editor envelope edits.
Play it back - the track from 8 is following the envelops but the new track recorded in 9 is not.
Is this a bug?

Therer are two different envelopes for volume, pan, etc. 1. the automation envelope, 2. the modulation envelope. In the arrangment view you can only see the modulation envelope, that youve made in session, if there was an automation envelope, its gone. You have to rightclick in the clip and you can choose show modulation or show automation.

If you are in the session view, go to the clip envelope, choose in the first menue mixer. In the second menue you will see track volume, track pan etc. Draw an envelope in the clip for track volume, then right click into the clip and choose the first "show modulation" and in the second menue you will find now an second entry: track volume modulation. Now you have two parameters for envelopes of the track volume and if you drag this clip into the arrangement view, only the track volume modulation envelope will remain. This is due to the new possiblity in Ableton, to record clip envelopes in the session view.

I want to work in the arrange view

If I right click in the clip I can't choose modulation or automation it seems. Is it possible to work completely in arrange? You say "see the modulation envelope that I've made in session" - so if I just recored the clip straight into the arrange view this might not be possible?

If you work in the arrangement, you can choose the automation envelope not in the clip, only on the right in the track menue. First menue mixer, second menue track volume etc, this the same menue, that you see in the clip envelope menue in the session. This is the automation envelope. And if you drawn in the session an modulation envelope ( the modulation envelope is the clip envelope, you know from live8), then you can see it after dragging the clip into the arrange too.

So, in the session you have both envelopes in the clip envelope menue, in the arrange you have only the automation envelope in the track menue, not in the clip, except you draw an modulation envelope (old clip envelope) into the clip in the session and after dragging the clip into the arrange you will see it. The automation envelope is favored over the modulation envelope.

The small red square at the parameters i.e. track volume, is the sign of the automation envelope and the small red point is the sign of the modulation envelope.

Please note that the "Volume" button on a
Midi clip in Live 8 actually modulates Track Volume (not Midi Volume).

You can still modulate the track volume via the Clip Envelopes view by first
right-clicking on the Track Volume slider and select "Show Modulation".
This will then add the Track Volume modulation to the Clip Envelopes view.

This will then function exactly the same as in Live 8.
