This is nothing new, in literary circles it's called ghostwriting.

then I could just see the tragic desperation in the producers who came up with that as a way of trying to actually earn a living from their music: "if I can't get paid by labels to release my tunes, then maybe I can con some talentless twats into buying them instead"

Of course, once you have "your" track, you'll need to pay some names to review it.

It's nothing new in music either, particularly in film scoring. Hans Zimmer has a whole team of people working for him, some of them unpaid intern lackeys.
