Why does ableton suite installation have to be so painful?

I really can't believe this, but it seems that to install all my suite packs I have to manually download and install 37 individual packages?
Is this really how it works? If so it is utterly ridiculous and Ableton should be ashamed of shipping with an installation process like that.

You can select all of them at once and drag them all on top of the Live window. That will install all of them in a single action.

Hi Ark,
I gathered that, but requiring 37 individual downloads is still a terrible user experience! In logic for instance you can just select the packs in app to grab them.
I guess it would take 1 developer a week to build that in ableton, and that would save every user many hours. Its disappointing they don't value our time on a product this expensive!

Try checking the versions!
You have to find your Ableton library, and navigate to the folder such as
My Documents\Ableton\Orchestral Brass\Ableton Folder Info
then open properties.cfg. and read the version number.
Code: Select all
FolderConfigData
{
String PackUniqueID = "www.ableton.com/3";
String PackDisplayName = "Orchestral Brass";
String PackVendor = "Ableton";
Int PackMinorVersion = 0;
Int PackMajorVersion = 9;
Int PackRevision = 29310;
Int ProductId = 130;
Int MinSoftwareProductId = 4;
}
In this case I have installed Int PackRevision = 29310
Now go to the website and choose "your packs", and hover over the link for the relevant pack. You will see what the current version on the server is
So in this case, I'm up to date on this particular pack
Now simply repeat this process for the 37 packs.
Simple!

Nice!!!!
Having complained about ableton, I just installed komplete 7 from dvd last night. Its just as bad although at least it version detects. It took hours and now everything needs updating so having to run a tonne of separate installers. arghhh. Why do music companies hate their users so?

Because it's fun for the rest of us to watch others complain just so

I gotta agree with Cassp0nk on this.
Having to individually & manually download then install all packs is a pain in the ass. Especially if you don't download all in one sitting, or if they update specific packs you need to check you have everything up to date yourself.
It's all feeling a bit archaic.

Try to master 1 plugin first, it is better for your learning perspectives.

I'm with you all on this on this the process is not entirely clear (thx angstrom for clearing that up) as to which pack might need to be installed if you already have it. I don't think physical media is an option though as things change so fast before you no it your library is out of date! Good internet connection is a must for music production apps nowadays. Or just stop upgrading...if they would only stop tempting us!

Surely it's not such a big step for Ableton to enable automatic updates for packs as well as the main prog?
....and preferably download just the bits that have changed, rather than the whole lot over again.

I most certainly DON'T want automatic upgrading of packs.

I suggest that they make it optional, not obligatory.

said it before, and I'll say it again.
Current situation : L9 removes all information available in L8. Provides no new, or replacement functionality.
Proposed functionality : preferences tells user which packs are update-able, and which products are licensed

but but but then a user might see version numbers and a whole new tab and flip the hell out and uninstall ableton due to its complexity
