Instrument Banks

I have been experimenting with Machine within Live as a VST; I have a Launchpad95 emulating a Push.
I've noticed that Maschine groups can hold 16 instruments, each represented by a pad on Maschine, which allows me to switch instrument in a group instantaneously (say, a group called "Strings" and another called "Pads"); and almost as instantaneously (with Maschine Mk2) to switch groups, which gives me virtually instantaneous access to 64 different instruments in 8 categories, while performing continuously in Note Mode on my "Push" (Launchpad95), which is huge fun.

The only catch is that Maschine plays the tonic (key center) note when you hit the pad, but if you do the same thing on the L95. it doesn't matter.

Live to handles only individual instruments on a per track basis, so to do the above, I would need 64 tracks.... With Maschine, I only need one Live track to get at all my instruments....

Maschine's sounds are terrific, while I have not found that many that I like in Live's library (although it is respectable)... But the combination of the two together is DYNAMITE!!!

Sounds like a really good combination.

Would you mind explaining in some more detail just how you set this up)

Just set Maschine up as a VST in Live, and run as normal in pad mode (lock the pads with button 1), with each pad assigned a sound in its group. The Launchpad95 (and, I assume, the Push) will take care of the performance part. (The track with Maschine has to be selected....)

You can then change groups (banks of sounds) with the group buttons, and the pads will change the sounds within a group...

Oh - ok - I get you. That's really simple.

What's the CPU load like? I mean, you effectively have 64 different instruments loaded in one track via Maschine. Are you just using Maschine factory sounds, or do you have some VSTs loaded in Maschine (ie. Massive, Kontakt etc...)

I'm using just Maschine factory sounds (which are pretty good). The cpu hit is heavy with Maschine; it goes from about 10% or less to 50+ with just one instance of Maschine. A good reason to press for multi-core support from Ableton (I have a 3.6 Ghz 8 core intel cpu)

But those are a lot of sounds instantly accessible, and Maschine's Library is HUGE....
