Kontakt with Ableton & Logic

Here's the scenario:
My Kontakt library is way too large to keep on a MacBook Air, so I have it stored on an external hard drive.

Question:
Once I use those samples in Ableton or Logic to record a track, will they be saved within the file so I can disconnect my hard drive?

(Or would it require converting from MIDI to audio?)

I'm very low on on HD space, so I'm trying to find the easiest way to do this.

Thanks!

They won't be saved in the project if you disconnect the external drive, Kontakt will attempt to load the instrument and give a missing samples dialog box. Gotta have access to the actual samples whenever you load the instrument.

Thanks. That's what I figured...

So if I wanted a way around that, should I convert the MIDI to audio? Is that the best way to do it?

apart from putting the samples on your hard drive, I'd think yeah. Others might have some other way of doing it, but that's what I'd do.

They will be saved in your Ableton project if you choose to "Collect All and Save", no?

Nope not Kontakt samples or any other third party sampler. Only samples that are in Ableton instruments.

Really thank god for that as a 1GB piano sampleset saving everytime I use it would make my hard drive mucho fullo.

What size drive do you have? I know the drives are a pricey upgrade but I’d find it a big bummer if I had to hook up an external drive to a MBA regularly. Yeah, I’m stupid like that. Wouldn’t buy a MBA if I couldn’t afford at least a 256G drive.
