Neeed!!! More!!! Power!!!!

Post by nemoy » Tue Sep 17, 2013 11:20 am

This time, my Macbook crossed the line.
Complete crash on stage. I had to restart.
No Sound for about 10 Minutes and nothing i could do.
non me gusta!

Is it better to max up a 2010 15" mac book pro, (RAM & SSD Card)
or to buy a new one?

or Should I change the interface?
i'm using an RME fireface 400 now, and
i always thought, that was a good one...

Has anyone around here had good results in Terms of better & more
Stable Performance by installing an SSD & maxing the RAM?

And which SSD's are best?

(oh, and i've read a thing or two about disabling the dashboard,
turning off w lan etc. etc. the only thing left to do now seems
to be a change in Hardware)

Do you have any idea of what cause the crash?

Did this happen before, or has the computer gotten worse over time?

Well i dont know what exactly it was...
it startet with apparently messing up controller IDs

The Apc40 & APC20 as well as my two launchpads suddenly
started switching their positions within the set.
I thought it could be a lose USB connection, but it happened
randomly, with no connection to moving the USB plugs.

that happened about 10 times, and everithing got reeeeaaally slow.
It was just playing on that one loop, and I couldn't do anything
even with the trackpad or the keyboard. when I gave up and
hit space it took about 30 seconds to even stop the audio.

I haven't seen this kind of behaviour before on my setup...

Overheating? The delay between shutdown and restart and the general chaos all sound like overheating to me.

overheating can do such things? wow...
ok... So how do you play in those really hot&sweaty
club situations then? :))

But this time, it was an Open air festival,
around 1am and it was actually kind of cold...

Can Max for live cause this? I just remembered, that
i added quite a few (like eight) envelope followers lately,
to generate Midi CC from Audio, wich Is sent via
Midi to a mac mini, that generates realtime visuals...

I used a gamer laptop cooling fan. If it was a simple matter of cpu resources you'd have glitching, clicks and audio dropouts. If the computer crashed I would have thought you would be able to restart immediately. My laptop has heat sensors that stop it restarting when it gets too hot... which means there is a delay whilst the chip cools down. The 8 envelope followers can't have helped though.

also do a disk verify to make sure you don't need to fix your os, that could cause some issues as well. go for a permissions repair while you're at it.

I once had a problem with my MacBook becoming unresponsive like this, 2 days later my hardrive gave up the ghost...!

Might be something to check.

this.

the good news is the SSD will run cooler than a platter hard drive. the bad news... once a computer has a major thermal event things have a tendency to begin getting weird. typically either the motherboard (logic board) or CPU get damaged and cause the weirdness.

fingers crossed that it was the drive going bad and not a thermal event.

good luck at your show.

I feel stupid now!
I should have done that a long time ago!

Here's what happened:
After all these Years of wondering,
for the first ever ableton Live actually
did good on stage! no clicks, no dropouts,
no glitches, and no overall system failure!
And all that with a buffersize of 64 samples.

This is great!

so, I got myself a 500 Giga Samsung 840
Plus added as much Ram, a 2010 Macbook pro can take. (8 giga)
This cost me a few hundred Bucks, but damn
that shit really works!

to everyone out there struggling with ableton live's
performance, go get an SSD and max out your RAM!

I wish i'd have done this years ago!
