Ouf, had a hard time trying to think up a title for this one My point is:

Is there a way to "distribute" the frequencies of a sound unevenly on a stereo track?

That's one of these simple things so complicated to explain...
Here's an example: I have a synth sample. The sound's pretty rich, ranging from LOW to HI frequencies (well, like most sounds...).
Is there a way to split the signal so, for example,
all the LOW frequencies of this sound go to the LEFT channel
and all the HI frequencies go to the RIGHT channel???

The only way I can think of now is to duplicate the track,
one track is EQed to let the LOW to MID with the pan on the LEFT, the other one the MID to HI with the pan on the RIGHT...

Does that make any sense???
Is there a plugin I can use to do that simply (and possibly automate some variations)?

Any graphic EQ plugin would work well with opposing slopes.

A related old trick, if you have said graphic EQ's (or a Stereo graphic EQ with an independant set of faders for each side)

On the LEFT side set the faders [looking from low freq to high freq]:
full on / full off / full on / full off / full on / full off etc etc...

On the RIGHT side set the faders [looking from low to high]:
full off / full on / full off / full on / full off etc etc...

i.e. BOOST every alternate frequency on one side, and CUT every alternate frequency on the other side.

Result: a monster stereo-widening effect that coalesces perfectly when summed to mono. The more bands you have the better, a 31-band graphic works best.

do you have any example of stereo graphic eq? The only EQ I've got is apple's 31 band AUgraphicEQ... but with it to perform that trick I need to duplicate the track and most of all, it's really complicated to automate variations if I wanna shift frequencies from one left/right right/left, if it makes sense...
I'd like to find something maybe a bit less acurate than a 31 band eq but snappier, like, you get a result straight away...
Anyone knows of a little pluggin to perform these "frequency pannings"?

there are some plugins that do this, waves makes one and also there is a TDM plug called Wider I think

waves Q10...comes with 1 to 10 band parametric eq plugs

I think in waves it's the s1 imager or something like that

This is really cool for stereoizing mono drum loops too, I use two tracks, with EQs panning the hats (HIs) a bit to the left, the high mids (snares) a bit to the right. If you've just boosted these frequencies and the panning of both are equidistant, all the other frequencies will fall in the centre and all sounds peachy.

If you want to cut the other frequencies, for a cleaner sound, create a third track to house the frequencies you may want centre panned (bass drum most likely).

Then bounce it all into a stereo loop cos thats an unholy waste of track space there matey!

just downloaded the Waves Diamond demo, really amazing plugins!!!
the Q10 is EXACTLY what I need!!!!! And Q1 is perfect for rough experimentations. I wish Ableton could add independant L/R eq-ing on its EQ4, which would save me 150$!!!!!
the soundshifter sounds just soooo good compared to Live but it's too cpu hungry for my set up...
doubler, super tap... great plugins... but expensive... goin mad...

One little problem: Waves AUs crashed on me about 3 times, running it on Live 4.1.2, OS X.3.9

great plugins, but the iLok is a pain in the keister, and when it comes time to upgrade to stay compatible (and that time WILL come), you pay out the keister.... again, or you do their Upgrade plan and slowly pay out the keister once a year. either way, your keister will bleed.


Elemental Audio and Wave Arts get my vote for good sounding, low cpu consuming, great interface having, non wallet raping plugins.
check out Elemental Audio's Firium it has something like 62 bands... and you can easily adjust RIGHT independently of LEFT and vice versa. Heck, there's even a preset called "Stereo Weave" that does pretty much exactly the effect you speak of.

A hack-ish way to do this would be to route your signal to two new (L/R) audio channels (one for each stereo channel) and then use (a combo of) utility or panning or something, then apply an eq4 (or w/e) individually on each of these L/R channels.

Spent a good part of the day playing with the demos...
Q10 keeps on crashing as a AU, while as a VST its window doesnt even open... Waves seem to have serious compatibility problems on the Mac platform, or is it with Live? Im waiting a bit b4 gettin the beast, but could Tiger stabilize the situation?

Really liked Firium but the parameters are not automatable in Live
(None of these "sophisticated" EQs work in Live or what?)

Waves Arts Trackplug is not really what Im looking for...

Which so far leaves me with Andrew's hack-ish way...
No offence, but anyone's got other suggestions that would not triple my track amount?
