S friend needs your advice...

A friend of mine (no, really not me) is going to go to an audition to be on one of the "Country's Most Talented" shows, doing electronic music (but not with live). I think she's being sort of crazy, but it's her life. Is it a totally idiotic thing to consider? The agreement she had to sign is really like "if you get hurt while doing this you can't sue and we owe you shit go suck a dick" and "the show is for entertainment, we Own the performance video, we can edit it however we like, and your portrayal is up to us."

Whatcha think?

Oh!!! Is she auditioning for season 1 of We’re Only Airing This Because It’s a Chick Doing It For a Change? Go for it and wear a cute outfit is my advice.

Lol. Yeah. That is, however, excellent advice.

Another suggestion is sit her down and make her watch a couple Imogen Heap live sets. If she can’t do at least that she should probably just stay home.

Unless she has a rack. In that case just hand her a triangle and send her to the front of the line.

We all like our stereo types ha, of course there are women in elecronic music. (but not so many, because its kind of a geeky thing.)
But the other thing is unfourtunatly also true. Waring a skirt doing it, gets you into certain places. But those are places I wouldn't wanna go anyway, so I really don't care

What does the S mean? Special friend? Super best friend?

I say give it a go.

She needs to realise this is her one big shot at fame and fortune. There'll never be another chance like this. She has to shine. If she gets knocked out early, it's because her music is rubbish and her life worthless. In that case the last thing she should do is keep at it as before. What would be the point in that

Hope that helps.

A friend of mine entered NZ's Got Talent. She's an unbelievably talented live-looper/singer who already has solid underground status in NZ/Aus... she'd already released her first independently-funded album etc.

She went into the show with the explicit attitude of "I'm doing this to get some increased name recognition" and she made it all the way to the final. It's certainly helped her profile here in NZ.

Not sure if you're being tongue-in-cheek, but I disagree! I think so long as she doesn't buy into all the instant-fame / we-gonna-make-you-a-big-star bullshit, and she knows exactly what she wants to get out of the experience, and she's a decent person who's not likely to give them any fodder for ridicule etc etc, then it's not a bad idea.

It'd be better if she didn't cover up her mouth/mic whilst making some of the sounds, so the
audience can see what she's doing - and that it's really her making those sounds.

But I think you have to be very careful with the contracts they give out.
I heard of contracts here in Germany, where, no matter how successful the show went for you, they'd still have the rights for anything you produce in the next few years.
In this case she should say thanks, but HELLL NOOOO!!!

This really is great, thanks! About the contracts, yes, if the show picks you up, your portrayal is as they prefer it based on how they'd like the show to go, and if you've picked up you will work with their management group or else. With an act like the one you've linked to, it went well, and it could have gone the other way if the producers wanted it to, but there is obviously a lot of talent being exercised there and it looks like she reps NZ culture well in addition to electronic music culture.

So the long and short is like this: the audition allows you to sing acapella, play an acoustic instrument, or bring a video of your act. She did 1 and 3.

PB, a perfect example, great info as always.

Thanks all, some really good info!
