Hi

Thinking of investing in Live 9 update & Push.

Can this combination be used for playing with breakbeat samples on the fly e.g. chopping, stuttering etc. ?

I know Push is not really set up for use with audio, but presumably something could be done with Live's sample player(s) in the Session view ?

I think I mention this way too often round here but PXT-Live is amazing and your best bet for this sort of thing.

It's all quantized so it's great for mashing around to come up with new variations. It can all be re-sampled of course to be distributed on the arrangement view.

I'm truly baffled by what stray has done with the PXT script!
To the OP: I'm sure you could work with the normal Push script and achieve what you want with Sampler and the new parameter lock of the step sequencer. But you should really consider getting PXT!

Wow - that seems impressive, but quite deep. Is it easy to get to grips with ?

Can my original question be dealt with using Push alone (e.g. no PXT-Live) ?

And it will even get more impressive with PXT-Live Plus. It definitely needs some time to learn, you wont have the full enjoyment the first day you play with it. But it is worth the time!

Yes, no, it all depends on the exact workflow you have in mind.

Well you could re-sample a drum loop that you've created, then use the 'Slice to new MIDI track' function to chop it into slices on a new Drum Rack which you can then use to Mash away to your heart's content. hmm

This workflow isn't quite as real-time though and you'll have to use your Mouse.



The hardest part about learning PXT-Live is knowing the button combination presses to get to the 'Mode' that you want. Once you've committed them to muscle memory it starts to flow. Each Mode is pretty straight forward once you've navigated there.

The ability to mash on 64 Drum Rack pads AT THE SAME TIME is amazing, especially if they are filled with slices of chopped and glitched drum loops that you've re-sampled and sliced yourself.

I should say that I would be at the bottom of a very steep learning curve, both with Live & Push.

I have Live 6, but never really got to grips with it (partly because didn't spend enough time with it).

So am pondering whether to really go for it & try to create music with Live 9 + Push ... although I don't have that much spare time to play around with it.

But the idea of being liberated from mouse + keyboard is seriously tempting me..

$20 for PXT is a no-brainer, but £628 for Push+Live (20% discount period) is taking some deliberation

I love many genres of music (and play keyboards + guitar), but would probably focus on electronic / breakbeat / jungle with Live.
