Ableton has stopped opening

Something has happened to Ableton. I noticed that when I use ultimate mixer with max live, ableton becomes very unstable. The in/out/auto buttons start flickering and the audio goes a bit screwy. Anyway today it crashed and I had to force quit because the spinning wheel thing went into an infinite spin. Now live wont even open. The blue square just hangs there and says creating bug report but never opens. What do I do?

since upgrading to 9.1 and M4L 6.1.6, i've had a few sessions that would no longer open if they had a max plug in. the weird thing is, since i save my projects incrementally ( first save is xxx.a, second is xxx.b...etc) if i start loading with xxx.a, by the time i get to xxx.h ( with the max plug) it usually opens. if i just try to open xxx.h first...it crashes. since pulling the max plugs out...no problem with sessions.
max is definitely a little wonky right now ( or the plugs created within it need an update )

Ultimate Mixer is no longer under development. it doesn't work for me under Live 9.1 either. the second window will open (eventually) but it is blank...
