SOLVED: Randomly enveloping parts of a long sample

How would I do this:
I have a sound that is 30 seconds long (random length). It is playing but no sound is heard until I hit a key. When the key is struck, the sound heard is from that particular moment in time and based on the particular envelope.
Example:
Some one slowly sings the letters A B C D E F G H I J K L...Z. You'd only hear a letter, or sequence of letters, when a key is depressed.
I'm not takling about enveloping the whole sound or breaking the sound into slices. You'd hear something like:
C.......G....I.J....K..L...M....OPQ...R..........A...C.....E.....FG etc.
Anyone know how to do this?

If you sliced to Midi, you could play a particular section depending on which key you hit. But not depending on the moment in time.

Sampler. LFO mod the 'sample start', use S&H.

one audio track - playing the ABC sample
one midi track - with a M4L Midi Envelope device
map the Envelope device to the ABC track's main volume. hit a midi note to trigger the sample at the current position.

Seems like a good idea. How do I map the M4L device to the audio main volume? Forgive my ignorance.

click the device's Map button. it flashes. then click on the volume. now it's mapped.

I got that far. Now, I can't get the device to trigger when striking a kb key.

there are 2 versions of the Envelope device. make sure you're using the Midi version, and make sure to midi-arm the midi track it's on.

I only see one effect, that being Max MIDI Effect->Envelope.amxd. I've got the effect mapped to the slider of the sample track and the MIDI effect track armed. When I hit the KB, nothing triggers.
I"ve put the sample tracks slider to 0 before mapping. When I play the track it performs like the slider is at 10. I'm not understanding this at all.
Thanks for your help.

Ooooofh. I'm so embarrased. My keyboard was off. Once I discovered this everything worked just as I wished.
My apologies to all from this dufus!
Thanks to all.
