just got myself a uc-16 and i'm having some difficulty getting it set up. i was under the impression that it was more or less plug and play, but i suppose i'm missing something. wondering if anyone has a solution for me. i'm using a powerbook g4 400 running os 9.2.2 and oms 2.3.8. i have installed the drivers (i've tried the ones on the included cd and the downloadable version). the device shows up in oms when creating a new studio, and when i 'test studio' i that horribly recorded 'midi recieved' message. but only the first time i turn a knob. any additional turns of any other knobs gets no response from oms. i thought this was unusual, but i went ahead and saved it as my current setup. i then opened up live and went to the preferences to select the uc-16 as the midi input controller. it showed up in live and i selected it, but live failed to recieve any messages from the controller. i also tried to get muzys to recognize it with no luck. what am i missing? i know there are plenty of uc-16 users out there. anyone else have the same issue or am i just a moron. i've written evolutions tech support, but i'm not sure how long a response will take and dammit i want to play with it now! thanks.

ah hell. nevermind. it just started working for some reason. maybe i need to start up netscape, quit it, and then start live for it to work. i don't know. bizarre. i just did it too. check the times on these posts as see my speed. damn computers, i'm gonna sell this heap and get a harmonica.

wait...nope...i spoke too soon. i did get it to finally work in live, assigned some knobs and got funky for a bit. then it stopped sending midi. i did nothing to change my setup, no wires came loose, no other programs launched, no changes made to the uc-16 itself. i'm stumped. the only way i can get it to show up again is to uninstall the uc-16 and oms, reinstall everything and create a new studio, only to have it crap out again (the amount of time that it works before craping out seems to be random). i've contacted evolution again, but haven't heard back. wondering if anybody else has had problems like these with the setup mentioned above.

I think instead of a harmonica you should get yourself a pc. I know lots of musicians that have trouble with macs even film makers i know have had trouble with macs. Leave the exclusive mac club and sell out for a pc that will probally solve alot of your problems.

i did that recently, built myself a pretty screamin' pc. i figured i could put together a pc for less than a new mac would cost me. good thing i debunked that myth. spent $1200, which would have got me a refurb 12" tibook. spent three days trying to get rid of a virus it got the second i plugged in an cat5 that caused it to shutdown with a one minute's notice. the fix for the securtity bug was on the windows site, but i had literaly 38 other security fixes that it said i had to download before i could fix this one. not easy to do in the minute the virus gave me. i finally gave up on having it online at all. the i spent another two days trying to figure out how to make sound come out of the damn thing before i thought to myself, you know what, fuck this. i paid a ton of money for this machine, i shouldn't have to go through all this. so i sold on ebay, took an enormous loss (say what you want about mac vs. pc, but hands down macs have better resale value), rustled up some scratch and bought another ibook. i couldn't be happier.

incidently, i found that if i run it through a proper midi/usb interface (my midisport2x2) it works fine.

have you tried hooking it up to a power adapter instead of letting it be usb powered?

had an UC-16 running on os9.2.2... yeah. I reckon that os 9 is a bit weird with USB midi devices, sometimes my G3 ibook would recognise it either.

If you can, go up to OSX. it solved all those USB midi problems for me.

yeah, no i'm fine now. i started this thread over a year ago and i've long since found many acceptable solutions. thanks.

I guess I should have looked at the date... a post about a harmonica to bubble it back up is pretty funny though
