Benefits of running a MIDI group track into an audio track?

I posted this on Reddit but probably should have come here first.
I've been taking a look at the Noah Pred Live set that Ableton shared recently (http://www.noahpred.com/ableton/TCLive9BD.html) and the track layout isn't something I'm able to make a lot of sense of at times.
Particularly the 808 Kick from the Drums MIDI group running into the 'Kicks' audio track. What exactly is going on, and what's the benefit of doing that as opposed to just adding effects directly onto the 808 Kick track in the MIDI group itself?
I guess there's also something similar happening with the 'Returnity' track, although the sound source is slightly less clear.
Any further reading or directions to parts of the Live manual would be much appreciated.
