Push overwriting MIDI clip in armed track

i'm new to Live 9 and Push, and i'm having a little problem… i'm sure there's a simple solution to this, but im struggling to find it.
using the Push, when i come back to a project to add additional automation to a track, as soon as i start recording, Ableton overwrites the midi clip in the arrangement window. this seems to be because Push is arming whichever track it is focused on.
i'd like to be able to add automation to the existing midi clip. i don't want to overwrite it. is there a preference setting (in Live or on the Push) i've overlooked?
cheers
