music pitched down when recording at 96khz

I am not what is going on as i am new to recording, I am usind a firewire 410 and g4 powerbook. I thought i would try recording setting the sample rate in live to 96khz 24 bit to see if i could notice any improvement in sound quality ? the recording turned out slow ? as if it was half the speed of what it was meant to be so set the sample rate back to 44.1khz and it recorded fine in real time ?
