Finer control of master tempo?

Hey there. Long-time lurker, first-time poster. Totally unfamiliar with the Max4Live world; apologies if this has been asked before - couldn't find it in some searching.

I've finally begun to utilize my Live rig as part of my DJing setup, for loop and stem triggering - basically as a couple of remix decks plugged into channels on my DJM900. Unfortunately, Live doesn't sync as well as I'd like to the MIDI output of the DJM, so I've been running it free of sync, using the nudge buttons on my APC40 to keep it in time. What I'd like to do is map the master tempo to a knob or fader on the APC, but no matter how tightly I restrict the control range, I can't adjust the tempo finely enough - it's always off by a couple of tenths of a BPM. Now as I understand it this is simply a restriction of the MIDI protocol, having only 128 discrete values and all, right?

What I'm wondering is: Is there a possible workaround in Max to toggle the master tempo between coarse and fine adjustment? Hit a button and the tempo moves in finer increments, so that you can get right down to the exact BPM? That would be spectacular. Right now I'm typing in the BPM manually to launch loops over top of DJ mixes - this works fine, but I have some number keys mapped to view tracks and sometimes accidentally type in a new tempo - it would be nice to have the full tempo control right on my APC40, like the pitchfader on a turntable.

Which reminds me... I'd really like to see some sort of implementation of platter control of Live - use the jogwheel of (for example) a Behringer CMD-PL1 or Denon DN-SC2000 to bend the master tempo instead of the limiting nudge buttons. This way you could treat your Live set like one turntable and not worry about external machine synchronization - I'm already spinning four decks, what's one more platter to worry about? Has anyone ever done anything like that with Max?

You may want to check out the free Isotonik device for M4L. It works with the APC40 and allows coarse or fine master tempo adjustments.

Thank you!! ;-)

It's downloadable from http://www.maxforlive.com/library/devic ... sotonik-le but if you're djing with an APC40 you should really check out the full version and save yourself a couple of years of work !!

Cheers

Oh, wow... once again I completely missed something that solved my problem - there are two assignable tempo controls, coarse and fine - before and after the decimal place, that was easy to miss. But now I have my APC's Master level fader mapped to coarse tempo, and the Cue level knob controlling decimal-point fine adjustment. Works like a charm, no M4L necessary. Thanks though, Artoo and S4racen! :)

I still stand by what I said about platter controller integration... it'd be a lot more 'comfortable' in a DJing context than using the nudge +/- to bend tempo.

Rob Swire of Knife Party/Pendulum built one that used a Pioneer CDJ as it's control source...

Don't think it ever came out though...
