improvising live sets with midi controllers (your systems)

Hey I just wanted to see how people use ableton and midi controllers to improvise with their live sets.
Some ways I've thought of improvising are mapping out melodic samples onto pads (i have an mpd32) that i can trigger, fx sends, volume rides, master fader reverbs and filters (not that original i know)
How do you guys improvise with your live sets?
