I had a thought about a thing, it's a midi controller, something like a guitar or Stick that would have "midi strings" where the strings were thin pressure sensitive midi ribbon controllers. Not too thin, but relatively thin, but not so thick where the neck would need to be really broad, and the neck would also not need to be as long as a guitar (equal spaces for halftone values).

Is there such a thing? Would you want such a thing?

(edited) I'm riveted by this vision, I'm a guitarist and I am wanting this really badly all of a sudden. maybe i'm easily riveted, i am imaging playing it, each string controlling an instance of operator.

There is the famous Chapman STICK - played by tapping the strings. 6, 8 12 stringed versions

MIDI pickup for your guitar. Then assign the notes on it in Ableton to samples. I don't know about what you are describing, but this might be something interesting to explore.

Specially modified Roland GK pickup - on both sides. You end up with a total of 2 pickups - hook those into the GI-20 guitar-to-MIDI interface and you're golden.

I've thought about this. I am concerned that the midi guitar pickups would not track the way I'd like, and I'd be disappointed.

The continuum keyboard is closer to what I'm thinking about, this is almost exactly like four or six of those continuums, stretched really thin, on a Stick-like neck (I say this because it likely would have to be a little wider than a guitar neck to accomodate the "midi continuous strings") and the 0 octave note for each string is tuned like bass or guitar. You'd sling it over your neck, like bass or guitar.

The difference between this and a purely guitar based model would be that one would always play "hammer on" style, no picking, to have your right hand free for PC/midi/knobs/mixer control. There would be fret markings, to allow easily "porting" guitar/bass knowledge to this instrument.

mike, it sounds like you think of the continuum as monophonic? It isn't at all.
