tracks peak at -6db, master set at 0db. limit and thats it.?

Hello good people,

All of my tracks are peaking at -6db. My master is set at 0db. I like my levels and now I'm ready to slap a limiter on the master to finish this thang.... I've increased the gain by 5db on the limiter. MY QUESTION IS: should I turn up the individual track faders up to 0db and then adjust the limiter? Or do I leave all the individual tracks at -6db and adjust the limiter to achieve maximum loudness?

Adjusting the limiter is easier, but either way works.

Be aware that no matter what you do it won’t be as loud as professionally produced tracks played in iTunes.

We await your post about that.

I figured it was only a matter of time before I got a condescending post from the many haters on this forum... I just finished this track, and for only being at ableton live and music production for about a year I think I did a fairly good job. Take a listen below beatsme... I'd appreciate some feedback considering you're obviously an expert producer...

not bad. really good if you've only been at it a year.

Thanks man. I decided to take the plunge and bought everything last April (Monitors, Audio Interface, Live 9Suite, Launchpad).

My thread was directed solely at the mastering process. I guess 'some' people on here couldn't read between the lines and took things a bit out of context...

Best advice I can give is to get thick skin man, you're going to run into this a lot, it's just part of the process :)

Thanks for the advice Tarekith- I'll certainly take it to heart. I kind of have to considering I've read all of your production guides more times than I can count on my hand. I'll post the link bc I'm sure theres many on this forum who could benefit from reading these...

I have a feeling I'll be contacting you in the near future for some mastering services.

Geeez. That was a general quip aimed at these type threads, not at you directly. Admittedly if I closed my post off with  or :P then you probably wouldn’t have been so quick to assume I’m judging you specifically.

Can’t check out your track at work so I’ll have to check it out later. But even without listening to it I can already tell you it’s not loud enough. :P

I checked out your track. I dig it. Reminds me of a slightly less funky Pretty Lights.

Thanks man I appreciate it. Pretty Lights is probably one of my favorite producers.

I liked his first couple releases but then it got all samey and predictable. Still a cool style to aim for though.

All your tracks shouldn't be peaking at the same level.
