so a compressor expands the wave shape from within giving it a sorta longer decay... and a limiter turns the volume down whenever the peak limit is reached... so what if i turn the volume up till it peaks everywhere (20-30db, think maxed out) and the wave shape's all off the grid with an added limiter of .03 so it's kind of like i just zoomed up to the center... would that be considered a form of compression? like a compressed overdrive?

Yes, limiting is a form of compression because you are squashing the signal. This will give you a bit more insight. Also compression is essentially reducing the difference in volume in a clip. This might help you...
