Question about Groove Template Behavior

Does anyone know how exactly Ableton's groove templates effect midi and/or audio clips? In other words, how does the template know just to make the hi-hats have a little swing or that a percussive element is slightly off the grid? Are the groove template algorithms just based on precise frequency analysis or is there some other intuitive process involved?

This might be helpful:

I don't think Ableton specifically picks out a frequency to add groove to. I believe it is more based off of the 'base' setting in the groove pool which can be changed between 1/4, 1/8, 1/16th notes ect. This generates groove on these beats. Hopefully this is somewhat in the direction of what you are looking for. Cheers! :D

Alright that makes sense. So, no matter what the sound/percussion element is, groove templates are strictly grid timing based? If multiple sounds are on the the 3rd beat of a bar and a particular grid template shifts everything on that 3rd beat slightly after the third beat, then all of those elements will follow suit no matter what frequency that element is?

Also, I read an article recently that mentioned using multiple, complementary groove templates. Does anyone have any further insight into this?
