that philosophical thread

Think about this for a moment.. What if humans are to earth what a virus is to a cell? We reproduce at a massive rate, and we kill our host with our waste.. What if the very processes happening in our body are a mirror image of things happening on a global, no, universal scale? Perhaps the systems of electrons and nuclei on the atomic level are a fractal of the systems of planets and proto-suns taking place on the cosmic scale... What if the universe is but an atom in a great, ultra-massive molecule? What if the big bang was just a spark of a neuron in the brain of a giant? It makes one think.

It's a curious idea, but if we are going to extrapolate the physical scale, then extrapolate the time scale too. Humans have been here a long, long time. If you are basing the idea on recent history, then your virus, or cell mutation or whatever, can only be regarded as a momentary infection, that is only likely to kill the host in the absence of the production of antibodies and an immune response, which could leave the host stronger in the long run.

Yeah it can fit. But don't just fit part of it, for the sake of eco-emo hand-wringing or an unhealthy disconnect between ourselves and da environmentz.

Not arguing, but if we're gonna drop exciting stoner theories in the Lounge then think them through. There's a slippage from humans as cells of a larger body to... humans are viruses. Which we can only make if (1) we're feeling a bit down, (2) fell headlong into an environmentalist social control agenda - an upside-down religion where we must die for their sins, or (3) just watched The Matrix and dug that cold mofo with the suit and earpiece.

Yes and no, I reckon. (Apologies!) I will check out Emergence.

Humans are doing what we do.

Create, destroy, build, conquer and most of all survive

just like viruses and any other species in this world (and maybe the universe) if the conditions are favorable to take over and reproduce, they will do it and then something else will come along and takeover which is more adapted and successful.

people have to get rid of the idea that the current situation for everything is the right one.

shit happens

then more shit happens which changed the previous shit happens which will be changed by future shit happens

There is, in a very real sense, an enormous moral chasm between humans and viruses.

We are the only creatures with consciousnesses. Homo Sapians Sapians.

Humans know what they are doing but don't give a fuck. Viruses are just doing what viruses gotta do.

Free will is mostly an illusion.
That's not what your ex wife said.
