Hi

Basically i am recording vocals over a track, so one channel is the track, one is the mic...
But i cant hear the mic in my headphones when i play/record!?

I noticed the mic channel volume monitor is grey, but the music volume monitor is green...

How can i set my mic up so i can hear it through my headphones along with the music please?

Thanks

The track's monitor option is probably set to "Off".
You may need to activate the I/O section to see the three monitor buttons.
When you switch in on, you will have to live with the round trip latency of your audio interface and hear your voice a lot later in the phones than you're actually mumbling into the microphone.

You're better off with leaving it off and using any direct monitoring options your interface should better have.

You don't even tell what microphone and what audio interface you have. So no one will be able to tell you how the aforementioned direct monitoring options may work.

And I'm not ready to tell you how software monitoring in Live works, you basically copy-paste-started another thread.
Now go back to:

and try "play about there" some more.
- Find the monitor section.
- Try the manual: 14. Routing and I/O

So, no direct monitoring from there. Pity, isn't it, because direct monitoring is a very useful feature of a soundcard.

But I skipped through that video jestermgee linked, brought back one little detail I had overlooked:

The track with he grey volume meter is plainly and sd simply muted. - I was completely fixed on the monitor setting (which has to be "Auto" on an armed track of course), that I didn't think about this.

and the screenshot is supposed to be where?

Man give the exact reference of your soundcard and we could REALLY help you!

You need an example maybe.

My soundcard is a focusrite saffire pro 24 dsp firewire.
I also have E-MU 0404 usb 2.0

then what is yours?

you cry for help but you don't answer the basic

He did actually provide this info:

I am using a standard mic, with a small jack, connected in to the mic jack input on my laptop...

So, no interface.

If you can post a screenshot then possibly we can assist. The level may be grey because you are not "monitoring" the channel. You would need to switch the monitor to ON for the channel.

Otherwise honestly I would do a bit of googling. There is a LOT of info out there to flick thru and you could have found your answer way before now. Only way you will learn is by trial and error unless you ahve a teacher there to show you.

"Standard" microphones use XLR connections. You're not using a "standard" microphone.

Anyway, go into preferences and select the input as the built in input. But this will be fruitless, because once you can monitor what you're doing, the latency will be hugely annoying.
