Cannot create edit clip envelopes

Hello, All -

I'm a newbie to Live and am having trouble being able to create / edit clip envelopes.

It appears that the clip envelope functionality is somehow disabled -- the arrow in the upper right hand corner of my envelopes window in the Clip View is not "illuminated" but is instead dimmed out, as are some of the controls. When I select an audio clip in either session or arrangement view, I see the clip waveform and can play it back, but no indication of envelopes. I can choose what type of envelope to display, but nothing is there. Also, the draw tool seems to have no effect.

This is driving me nuts -- all the tutorials online show the envelope appearing and there is never an explanation of anything that matches my circumstance.

Help! Does anyone have any suggestions?
