I've got a line on a push for a good price through craigslist, but, as always, i'm cautious of purchasing stolen gear. Is there an easy and quick way to check who the push is licensed to and if it might be stolen?

Maybe you can ask for the device's serial + the seller's name (or the one he used to register his Push) and then get in touch with the ableton support to check if the names matches. When you run Push for the first time it connects and register at ableton.com just like Live, so it might be doable.

No Push does not do this, the Ableton Live software does this. When you buy Push the license is for the associated software (intro, standard or suite)not for the controller, which can be used by anyone who has Live 9.

When I got Push, I also got a receipt from the merchant, which I keep for warranty etc purposes. Maybe ask for that?

Have a look at your account, you'll see your Push's serial (which is not the same as the Live license associated with it) with your other licenses.
If the vendor gives these informations and get in touch with the buyer and ableton, I don't see why Ableton won't cooperate.

Yes indeed if you get Live 9, or upgrade to Live 9, via purchasing Push you will see a Push serial number in your user account.
The point I was trying to make (probably badly) was that the Push serial number does not have the same significance as the Live 9 serial number.
For example, if you already own Live 9 and purchase Push at a later date you will be able to use Push without registering it. Also, if you own Push and download the trial version of Live 9 on a different computer you will be able to use Push with the trial version.
Not having a Push serial number in your user account will not prevent you using it as long as you have Live 9. But if you don't have Live 9, registering a Push serial number will get you a version of Live 9 (assuming the number is not currently registered).
