recording automation only in a clip, not MIDI note data

Hi Everyone,
Let's say I have a virtual instrument on Track 1 that is receiving MIDI note data from a sequencer on Track 2. I want to use Push to record automation on an effect I've placed in the chain after the instrument on Track 1. Right now, when I do that, I'm also getting the MIDI data recorded into the clip. Is there a way to record JUST the automation, and not the notes, so that I can continue to play the instrument with the sequencer on Track 2?
I would really like to be able to do this.
