RAM upgrade is definately most bang for the buck, but *when* you upgrade your hard drive, if you want to stay really mobile, there are laptop 2.5" hard drives that run at 7200RPM. They're relatively hard to find, but there's the Hitachi E7K60 for example.
You have to replace you original HD, but for me, it was well worth the effort.
